Eight more farm suicides in vidarbha-Central relief Failed to stop farmers suicide-VJAS

Nagpur-dated 19th feb.,2009

only after 72 hours of interim budget claiming to give much more needed fund for tackling the agrarian crisis ,has shown it’s effect as in vidarbha which is epicenter of farmer suicide in India eight more farm suicide have been reported in last three days ,reminding administration the farmers in vidarbha who are severely drought hit needs potable water, fodder ,food and work under NAREGA ,Kishore Tiwari of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS) demanded today.

Eight recent farm victims of on going agrarian crisis since june 2005 which has claimed more than 5000 farm suicides even after prime minister relief package are

1.ANANDA THAKARE IN YAVATMAL

2.BABAN DONGARE IN YAVATMAL

3.JANRAO TAYADE IN AMARAVATI

4.VASUDEO GOMARE IN WARDHA

5.GULAB WAGHMARE IN YAVATMAL

6.HARISHCHANDRA BURANDE IN BHANDARA

7.GAJANAN WAVGE IN BULDHANA

8.KRISHANNA SATHE IN WARDHA

Kishore Tiwari of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS) informed today.

As per official figure there is no significant reduction in farm suicides in last three years

And here is chart of farm suicides in west vidarbha that gives official data that in year 2006 ,2007 and 2008 has reported 1448,1246 and 1267 cotton farmers suicides even after Rs.3750 crore PM package and Rs.71,000 crore loan waiver .in the year 2009 more than 100 farm suicides have already reported showing severity of on going agrarian crisis due to wrong approach of administration to address agrarian crisis has resulted in more farm suicides even after the relief packages are in operation, Kishore Tiwari added.

All toll claims of agriculture growth ,credit and economic reforms in rural sector are only on paper ,interim budget presented by UPA Govt. has shown rosy picture of rural India where as farmers are in agrarian crisis. ‘it is unfortunate that state failed to give fresh farm credit even after the loan waiver and debt trapped farmers in distressed area were forced to take huge crop loan from private money lenders that resulted in more farm suicides after loan waiver due to crop failure this year. this year too draught has been reported in central and south India but interim budget has not provided any fund for tackling agrarian and rural problems in that area ’ tiwari added.

There is nothing for vidarbha cotton and soya growers as they were expecting special incentive for export and increase in import duty tariff to avoid further recession in cotton and soybean . even central Govt .has extended prime minister relief package for 31 suicide prone district but there is no fund allocation for the same ‘is it single that Govt. is winding up the package’ tiwari urged.
The complete failure of NREGA and NRHM in distress area has not even discussed in interim budget more over there are toll claims of it’s success .one hand Govt. has talked about food security but they have failed to give any scheme for food crop promotion. Interim budget failed to increase the quantity for BPL families to be covered in anttodaya scheme which was promised earlier .
farmers and poor both have been ignored in the interim budget giving the hint that they are likely to be ignored in future too., tiwari said.
